Resilience and Generosity: Visitors Contribute $415,000 to Support Beloved National Parks
Despite a partial federal government shutdown and periodic national park closures due to hurricanes, volcanic eruptions, and damaging weather in fiscal year 2026, donations at visitor center store checkout counters in Hawaiʻi and American Samoa underscored strong public support for national parks.
National parks visitors have generously donated $415,000 directly to parks at Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association (HPPA) visitor center stores in Hawaiʻi and American Samoa in just the last 12 months. There have been over $97,600 in donations in the last three months alone.
Every dollar given stays in the park where it was donated, helping to care for these priceless places. Donations support wild nēnē geese and Hawaiian petrels at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, as well as educational and wildlife programs at Haleakalā National Park. They also help preserve cultural sites and stories at Puʻukoholā Heiau National Historic Site, Puʻuhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park, and Kaloko-Honokōhau National Historical Park, while enhancing the visitor experience at each of these special places.
HPPA Executive Director Mel Boehl says, “Our park partners are deeply appreciative of the flexibility allowed by these counter donations to meet park program needs. They, and we, are reminded of the great love of parks visitors.”
The Hawaiʻi Pacific Parks Association has worked in partnership with the National Park Service for over 93 years, and currently partners with seven national park sites in Hawaiʻi and American Samoa.
HPPA Sales Director Michelle Augello adds, “People continue to demonstrate support for the parks they cherish. Their support ensures these treasured places remain vibrant and protected for future generations.”
