Hawaiʻi National Parks Nonprofit Debuts Hawaiian Petrel Plush Paired With National Parks Donation
Meet Kahoʻokele, The Hawaiian Petrel
Kahoʻokele (The Navigator) was developed in collaboration with Hawaiʻi national parks in order to support and promote park programs. This realistic custom Hawaiian petrel plush represents the native Hawaiian petrel, a seabird that nests in burrows high on Hawaiian volcanic slopes at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes and Haleakalā national parks.
The Hawaiian name, ʻuaʻu, sounds like the call the parent birds make when returning to the nesting burrow (squeeze the plush to hear the call). ʻUaʻu feed at sea, then fly miles inland and upslope to nest, and later, feed their precious single chicks. These petrels mate for life and had no terrestrial predators in Hawaiʻi until humans settled here, bringing rats, cats, dogs, and mongooses.
Anyone can contribute to the vital role of conservation efforts at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes and Haleakalā national parks. For every HPPA exclusive plush sold, HPPA is proud to donate one dollar to programs that help protect these beautiful ʻuaʻu at our two partner national parks. Kahoʻokele can be found at our national park stores as well as on our online shop: https://shop.hawaiipacificparks.org/collections/new-arrival/products/plush-uau-hppa
